What Is No Drill, No Shot Dentistry?

No Drilling*

Many treatments like fillings and crowns require your child to have some tooth structure drilled and removed, which can be uncomfortable. The vibration, sound, and sensations of a dental drill can really scare some kids. With no-drill dentistry techniques, less tooth structure is removed, so there's no need to use a dental drill.

No Numbing Shots*

Numbing shots can also cause anxiety for some kids, but they’re not necessary with drill-free dentistry. Since drilling is not needed, kids and parents can say goodbye to shots altogether! This simplifies the treatment process and keeps your child calm and reassured at Limestone Pediatric Dentistry.

The No Drill, No Shot Treatment Process

What To Expect

First, Dr. Lindsey will perform a comprehensive oral exam on your child, and get to the bottom of their oral health issues. Then, if it's right your child, she may offer a no drill, no shot treatment. This could include SDF (silver diamine fluoride), a stainless steel Hall crown, or a resin strip crown, among other treatments.

Depending on your child’s situation, you may get care right away, or you may need to schedule a follow-up appointment at Limestone Pediatric Dentistry in Athens. No shots or drills will be required at your child’s consultation!

Silver Diamine Fluoride

A patient checking his teeth after his dental treatment.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is made of a blend of silver, water, ammonia, and fluoride. This combination strengthens decayed teeth, kills any remaining bacteria, and hardens the cavity to prevent any further damage to the underlying tooth structure. This makes it a drill-free alternative to a dental filling.

Silver Diamine Fluoride is usually only used for baby teeth. This is because it stains the decayed area of the tooth black permanently, which is not desirable for adult teeth. SDF will stop decay, but it sometimes still needs a filling or crown to be placed over it to prevent re-activation of a cavity.

No Drill, No Shot Crowns

Hall and Strip Crowns

Stainless Steel Hall Crowns

Hall crowns are special, pre-fitted stainless steel crowns. They can be applied directly to decayed teeth without any drilling or enamel removal. Hall crowns are primarily used for baby teeth. Since stainless steel crowns look unnatural, Hall crowns are not usually recommended for adult teeth.

Tooth-Colored Strip Crowns

Strip crowns use a tooth-shaped shell that is placed over the tooth and injected with a dental composite material. The material flows around the tooth and the shell to create a tooth-like crown. This is a highly effective way to create tooth-colored, natural-looking crowns.

Are No Drill Crowns Effective?

Yes. Both Hall crowns and tooth-colored strip crowns are highly effective at protecting teeth from further decay. Dr. Lindsey can discuss the pros and cons of each treatment at your child's consultation.
